Almost 25% of New Brunswick’s covered bridges are in Kings
County, centered around Sussex. The Marven, Bloomfield
Creek, French
Village, Malone,
Smithtown, Bayswater,
tirney, Moores Mills
and MacFarlane cross
water south of
Sussex. The bridge
at Darling’s Island
is still in use even
though a “modern”
bridge has been
constructed right
beside it. The
Moosehorn bridge,
crossing the
Moosehorn Creek, can
be seen by visitors
as they travel on
the Route 1 between
Saint John and
Sussex. It is no
longer used to
transport traffic.
Traveling north of
Sussex many
tourists, including
tour buses, stop at
the Salmon River
Covered Bridge. It
also has been
replaced and is no
longer in use.
Nearby are the
Plumweseep,
Centreville, Tranton
and Oldfield. The
Oldfield Covered
Bridge appeared on
the 1992
commemorative 25
cent coin.
St. Martins, in St.
John County, boasts
that the only place
to be able to take a
picture of two
covered bridges with
one shot is in their
community. They are
the Twin Bridges,
Vaughan Creek
(leading to the
Fundy Trail Parkway)
and Hardscrabble.
Just a few minutes
drive from St.
Martins finds the
Tynemouth Creek
Covered Bridge
spanning the
Tynemouth Creek. It
was built in
1927.
